A while back i could only do maybe 4-5 and i was athletic. I got a pull-up bar about 2 months ago. It's located in my kitchen because it was the best place to place it in. Evertime i was making food.. cooking something.. or just walking by i would do some pull ups untill i got tired. Now i can do about 3 sets of 12 with 1 minute rest in between. Tomorrow im going to the gym and i'm going to see at what # i max out. I read in men's health magazing that every two weeks you should try maxing out to find out how much stronger you have gotten over a period of time.

like most exercises , all you need to do is work at them...try to do one more here or there...its not rocket science just takes a little desire....

i haven't tried pullups in yrs...

coconut- do you do dips? another great exercise that doesn't need weights...

Yes JMan.. i also do dips as part of my tricep workout. I try to squeeze 3 sets but it only gets harder. My friend puts a weight between his legs to put more pressure on the workout.

Right now I could do 15-18. No more than that. At a peak I could do about 22. You do 3 sets of 12. That is good. Pull-ups is a workout that can burn out your LAT muscles quickly. I doubt I could do 3 sets of 12, although I could do up to 18 for one set. I could probably hit 3 sets of 10, but not 12.

One thing that I do is pushups. I do at least 100 a day (sometimes more, rarely less). I hope to do 35,000 or more pushups this year (basically 700 or so per week)!

You are insane Coach... you mentioned in previous threads that you run in marathons and excercise a lot. You must have a lot of stamina do to 100 pushups daily and you are propably cut.

You mentioned "Pull-ups is a workout that can burn out your LAT muscles quickly." Can you tell me what you mean by that? As in burning out my LAT muscles.

Coconut,

Believe it or not, I'm not very "cut" or big (I'm 5'11 180 pounds, about a 32" waist). 100 pushups a day is nothing. I usually do it in two sets of 50. Sometimes I'll do the straight 100, but usually 75/25 or 60/40 or 50/50. Some days I'll up to 200-300, but rarely. It's just a ritual that I do (make it a point to get in at least 100. Sometimes I don't do it for whatever reason).

I ran the two marathons in 2002. I didn't do as well as I would have liked. I ran the first one too fast in the beginning and finished in 3hours 58 minutes. I was hurting the last 5 miles! The second one I didn't train as hard and ran easy in the first half marathon and beat my time by 20 minutes! I run the half marathons much faster pace (like most people), around 7:25-7:45/min. miles. I'd like to do one more while I physically can!

Right now I've been doing about 15-30 miles per week. I can do a 5K (3.1 miles) in about 6:30/min miles. Once I get over 5 miles the pace is about 7:00-7:15/min miles. Over 10 miles the pace gets slower (obviously). It's getting harder as I get older!

As far as the pull-ups and "burning out". This is different w/ every person, but when I do pull-ups I get weaker each set. I can jump up and do 12-15 pretty solid. But the next set I'd only get about 8-10. That's why I said I could do three sets of 10, but not 12. If I did 12 the first set my back (lat muscles) would get worn out/burned out quickly. Some people are different. I've seen people go until they couldn't do one more....then 2-3 minutes later they are doing the same number they did the first set. Amazing!

I now understand. It depends what kind of day i have... when i'm fully rested and eat well i can max out at about 17-20 pullups. When i do my sets i take a 1 minute to 1:20 in between because it's very tiresome.

Derek,

26? Wow! That's impressive. Anything over 20 is impressive, especially for heavier, muscular people. I've seen skinny, 140-160 pounders knock out 20+. But finding a 180-220 type guy to do those numbers isn't easy to find.....

would this be done with a reverse grip? or a chin-up grip?

I am thinking those who are lighter and 'wiry strong' would be best at this...I'm gonna try to start doing these....

I use to do Dips for years! Every night 10-15 sets, we had monkey bars and parallel bars up at our school field

'Dips' are a tremendous upper body exercise!

J-man asked, but I'll ask again. How is a pull up done? Is it with the palms facing you, or the palms facing away?

100 straight pushups??? I was happy recently when I got to 20. Could never do 100 in my wildest imagination and I weight a little less than you.

I do pullups with palms facing. palms reversed and 1 hand in each position (has a tendency to twist your body).

Right now I am doing ten sets of 10 with a minute break.
Been doing this exercise for a long time.

I have a bar in the basement rafters that I have to stand on my toes to reach.

You want your lats to grow, do wide grip chin ups with palms facing away. I can do about 12 but this will get your lats pumping. Dont cheat. Let your chin pass the bar and come all the way down so your arms are straight. Most people bring their arms like 65 degrees and go right back up....losers.

You're right TKim...that is a common cheat method in pullups and it can make a world of difference as far as repetition number is concerned. The full range of motion, chin above the bar to full arm extension with palms away, is the best way to fully strecth and gain muscular mass/strength in your lats. I weigh 200-205 back and forth and I can squeak out about 16 with the full range of motion, which is something I am proud of. You guys hit it as far as my experiences have shown, the lightweight "wrestler" bodytype can usually hammer out these reps. I have only seen a couple/three in my times, including professional bodybuilders, that I would dare say could hammer out over 30. I am quite impressed with 100 reps as far as pushups are concerned. Thats some major stamina.....Old Herschel Walker material there.
